Chapters 1 - 5 from Vicky

Okay group, here's some questions for the first five chapters to get us started with discussion. The questions are numbered according to the chapter they represent.
1. The Radley's seem to be a mysterious clan. Describe some of the characteristics they possess. Why do you think they behave as they do?
2. Scout didn't quite understand the principle of "entailment" (p.20). How would you explain it?
3. Calpurnia has an interesting relationship with Scout. There are two distinctively different scenes between the two in this chapter. Describe those scenes, in your own words. How does Scout feel about Calpurnia?
4. Scout makes an interesting discovery by finding the gum in the knot-hole of the oak tree. Make some predictions about who you think left the gum, and why.
5. Miss Maudie tells Scout that, "sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whiskey bottle in the hand of- oh, of your father." What do you think Miss Maudie means?

Ch 1 Question
The Radley's are different than the other neighbors in the neighborhood. The Radley's do not really follow along with what everyone else is doing for example on Sunday's they would allways close up all there windows and doors when everyone else around them where opening there windows and doors. They did not attend church with the rest of the community. The Radley's did not chat with there neighbors. Mr. Radley followed a very strike schedule each day of going to town at 11:30 and coming back at 12. He is a mystery to people around him because no one knows where he gains his money from. Mr. Randley's son was in a gang. They did small reckless things around town. One night they got into a lot of trouble Mr. Randle saved his son from having to goindustrial school. Aurthur ( Randley's son) stabbed his father in the leg one day. He got sent away. Now ever since Randle has not left his house.

Ch 2 Question
I think the best way to explain entailment is when you owe some one money instead of paying them you give them things that are worth money. For example food, clothes and wood would be worth a lot. So you are returning your debts with things that are worth money bit that are not actual money.

Thanks for answering my questions, Audrey! You're right on both of your answers/explanations. The Radley's are very mysterious. We get some information about them, but for the most part, the author is keeping us in suspense. I think that's part of the reason we find them interesting. Like the characters of Jem, Scout, and Dill, we want to know more about the Radley's.... what are they thinking and doing???
Good explanation of entailment. We don't hear practices like this, as they did in the past. Can you imagine paying for something by trading off something you made or grew in the garden???
I'll have questions for the next five chapters next time. Hope you're enjoying the story!
