Hey sports fans! You have done great so far with the readings, thoughts and questions. Here is the next set of questions for you to contemplate.
Chapter 16
Atticus is attempting to explain to the children why Mr. Cunningham, who was considered a friend, was trying to hurt him the night before. What is it he is saying about Mr. Cunningham’s behavior?
Chapter 17
Why was it so important to Atticus to repeat the questioning about what side of Mayella’s face was battered and bruised?
Chapter 18
Do you feel sorry for Mayella when she is on the stand and answering Atticus’ questioning?
Chapter 19
Mr. Dolphus Raymond said to the children, “You aren’t thin-hided, it just makes you sick, doesn’t it?” What does he mean by this?
Chapter 20

Chapter 18- When Mayella is on the stand and is being questioned, I do not feel sorry for her. She becomes very defensive and short tempered. Though she has a hard life, when she is being questioned, she doesn’t have the attitude to make almost anyone feel pity. The only person who did feel sorry for her was Atticus; he felt sorry for her because he knew he had really hurt her.
Spence,
It is certainly hard to feel sorry for someone, especially a character that we don't like, but at the same time as you begin to understand how difficult Mayella's life must be, one can only feel pity for her. This is very much so related to another character in the story that we read about. Do you remember who else was not a very good character, but inspite of that, Atticus took pity on? Think back to earlier chapters, who else did Atticus feel sorry for?
Chapter 17:
Atticus asked the question of, what side of the face did Mayella have bruises on, so many times becaue he was making sure to prove a point. This point was the if he said the left side of her face than he would be lying that it was Tom Robinson that hit the girl, because Tom's left arm was "handicap/crippled". This is why Atticus asked that question so many times, just to prove a point and also to try and prove that Tom Robinson is innocent.
Chapter 17
When Atticus continued asking the same question over and over again he was trying to prove a point. this was that she was bruised on her right and that means a left handed person did the bruising. Tom Robinson though had a very bad left arm
I agree that Atticus's goal in asking the sheriff so many times about the right side of Mayella's face was to convey to the jury that Tom Robinson could not have inflicted her injuries with his shriveled left hand. I think that Atticus's point is well made. In a truly just trial, there is no way that Tom Robinson could have been convicted for Mayella's abuse without a shadow of doubt.
