Chapter 11
I think that Mrs. Dubose left Jem the flowers for several reasons. One reason being is that she wanted to apologize for calling Atticus a nigger lover and that she deserved to have her flowers ripped up, but she could not help her illness. However she could explain the things she did to Jem directly so she did it mentally
Mrs. Dubose left Jem a box with a white camelia flower inside. Mrs. Dubose gave this to her maid to give to Atticus to give to Jem when she died. I believe she did this because she wanted Jem to know she didnt think he was an evil kid after cutting bushes off of her first camelia plant.
Aunt Alexandra believes she should stay with the children for a little bit is to give the kids a bit of a feminine influence. The kids grew up without a mom by there side. SHe died when Jem was 6 and Scout was 2. I think she wants the kids to grow up witha normal household; a mom, dad, and a brother or sister. That is why I believe Aunt Alexandra is staying with the kids and the truth why she is staying with the kids.
Thank you for your responses! I believe that Mrs. Dubose left the flowers for Jem after she had passed away because she wanted the flowers to symbolize how she did, in fact, care about Jem more than he had thought.
I agree that Aunt Alexandra was staying with the family because she wanted the children to have a 'motherly' influence in their lives. I feel that it, as you have mentioned, is important to AUnt Alexandra that both Jem and Scout grow up with both a mother and a father in their life.
